Felabration 2019

Bringing the Afrika Shrine to Vancouver, Canada. Join us for the third year to celebrate the life and music of Fela Kuti. An evening of live music, traditional Nigerian dance, Eyo Masquerades direct from Lagos, Nigeria, and Nigerian food.

The evening is hosted by the original traditional Nigerian/Canadian Afrobeat band, Kara-Kata Afrobeat Group and Kara-Kata Afrobeat Society, a non-profit organization serving the community since 2012. Featuring some of the top local Vancouver and international musicians. Headlining the event is The Boom Booms. Also featuring Queer as Funk, Mostly Marley, Tonye Aganaba, Kesseke Yeo, and more. Check back for artist lineup updates.

Also celebrating the powerful African Women who were behind the creation of Fela Kuti’s music and success, we will host the first Fela Kuti’s Queen contest. The first prize winner will receive $500, second place $300, third place is $200. Contest details to come.

Fela Kuti created the Afrobeat musical genre. Afrobeat is a combination of West African styles of music and American funk and jazz. Fela was born in Nigeria and used his music to rebel against the corrupt Nigerian and African governments. He was a civil rights activist, in the category of top African social justice warriors.
